Instrument Making

At Ayres violins, an important part of the business is the making of new instruments. Over the years we have made many instruments for professional players throughout the U.K. and Europe, where they can regularly be heard in concert halls.
Our expert restoration work brings us into contact with many fine instruments made during the golden period of violin making during the late 17th and early 18th century, and this provides us with an intimate knowledge of construction techniques, materials and varnish.

All instruments are individually made, entirely by hand, from the best seasoned tone woods. Each one is made in much the same way they would have been in Stradivari’s day, and the majority of the tools which we use would be familiar to the great cremonese makers. Though this is a very time consuming method, we firmly believe it is the only way to make a truly fine instrument.
